Postdoc in fMRI & Object Recognition

Join Jorge Almeida and Alfonso Caramazza at the University of Coimbra for a fully-funded 2 (possibly 3) year Post-doctoral Fellowship exploring object processing using fMRI and multivariate methods. Work in a collaborative, resource-rich environment with access to top neuroimaging tools, a competitive salary (€1850/month net value), and a vibrant research team, at a UNESCO World Heritage location. Apply now: jorgecbalmeida@gmail.com or caram@wjh.harvard.edu

Jorge Almeida and Alfonso Caramazza are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focused on fMRI and object processing, based at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

We are seeking candidates with a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, or a related field, and a strong interest in the neural basis of object recognition and representation. Ideal applicants will have expertise in the area of object-related features such as shapetexturematerial propertiessurface characteristics, and action (grasp, use, etc).

We are particularly looking for researchers with:

  • Strong expertise in fMRI, especially multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and decoding methods (e.g., SVM)
  • Solid programming skills
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills
  • High proficiency in English

The selected applicant will work with Jorge Almeida and Alfonso Caramazza, and will also benefit from the lively academic environment and research groups, led by Jason FischerJoana Carvalho, and Robert Whitwell, which we are currently building in the Psychology Department of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, funded by a major European Grant – ERA Chair CogBooster. The project addresses central issues about object recognition and representation, including mid-level processing.

The position is for 2 to 3 years, and the salary is the standard Post-Doctoral pay-scale in Portugal (net value 1850 Euros per month; this is a competitive salary for the cost of living in Portugal and especially in Coimbra) with all the typical benefits (e.g., paid vacation).  Access to research infrastructure is fully-funded (e.g., fMRI hours) and some travel funding for conferences is available. The position is available immediately or upon an agreed starting date. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, until the position is filled.

The Proaction Lab is a well-established lab with an international group of researchers focusing on the cognitive and neural processes subserving object recognition and object use. Facilities include access to a 3T MRI scanner with a 32-channel coil, a 7T scanner (in collaboration with a site outside of Portugal), tDCS, and a psychophysics lab (120 Hz screens, button boxes, etc). Additional resources on site include a 256 ch. EEG and motion tracking and eyetracking systems. We also have a science communication office working with the lab and the CogBooster groups.

The University of Coimbra is a 700-year-old University and is a UNESCO world Heritage site. Coimbra is a beautiful and lively university city with easy access to beaches and mountains.

You should apply as soon as you can. If interested send an email to jorgecbalmeida@gmail.com and caram@wjh.harvard.edu, with a CV and motivation letter.
