Óscar Gonçalves recently received the 2022 Teaching Innovation Award by the University of Coimbra. The awarded project, U3C – University of Coimbra Consciousness Consortium, came to life through the course Neuropsicologia da Consciência (Neuropsychology of Consciousness) of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCEUC), having its first edition in the academic year of 2020/2021.
Professor Óscar Gonçalves’s ambitious project aimed to integrate the students not only in lectures and discussions, but also in a research project, in which the students were able to actively participate in the process of “making science”. The students joined researchers of the Proaction Lab and CO&MA team in their projects during the semester and, on the last day of class, they were able to present their work in a poster session.
The “hands-on” approach of the course provides rich learning experience for the students and encourage them to learn more about consciousness and the research environment. Even with just two years of existence, these classes inspired many students, some of them to the point of joining the CO&MA team.
