Surviving the quarantine with the Proaction Lab: 3 movies about memory

Memory is very important for us to retain information and thus it influences heavily our future actions. Having problems with memory could lead to very different results in our lives, but could also give rise to very original stories. Here are three suggestions for different movies about memory.

Memento. This 2000 mystery movie by Christopher Nolan, follows Leonard (Guy Pearce) desire for vengeance. He has anterograde amnesia, which prevents him from creating and keeping new memories. However, his last memory is of a man named Jon G. breaking into his house, raping and murdering his wife. To solve his wife’s murder he will use post-its, tattoos, and photos and try to decode a very complex enigma. We already can imagine you getting very intrigued by this synopsis.

Inception. This later sci-fi production also by Christopher Nolan (2010) depicts the theme of false memories. Leonardo DiCaprio is Dom Cobb, a professional thief that steals information by navigating in the people’s subconscious minds, through their dreams. In the movie, the character has the job of implanting a piece of new information in a target’s subconscious, thus creating false memories. Although this is science-fiction movie, false memories are a phenomenon that may happen in real life due to other reasons.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Our final suggestion is a beautiful sci-fi drama, made in 2004 by Michel Gondry that explores a world where is possible to erase memories with surgery. Although you may be used to see Jim Carrey as a comic actor, in this movie he plays a great tragedy performance, along with Kate Winslet. With a non-linear narrative, the movie shows how the couple decides to erase each other from their memories, after a failed relationship.
